Stavvy's World
Shortly after his departure from Cumtown, I was commissioned to design a live studio set for comedian Stavros Halkias, for his then unnamed show in development, Stavvy’s World.
The first stage of the build centered a trompe-l'œil backdrop of the Greek landscape—a Santorini scene in the mockup. The parthenon arch structure in the sketch was designed to be reducible as time and budget allowed, to a minimum viable product.
The more grand vision called for a façade of semicircle columns of primed and painted corrugated steel capped by prefabricated halves, to give depth but remain flush with the set wall to allow talent/furniture to be as close to the wall as possible and make the most of already limited space between talent and a 3 camera setup. This structure further provides a small space for overhead lighting or a retractable screen for keying. The overhead sign would draw from experience I’ve had rigging faux neon using LED coils. Alternatively I’ve worked with EL wire in the past for similar results.
In the end the design was simplified significantly, but the original conceit remains.
